What is Electrotherapy?
Electrotherapy (also known as Electrical Muscle Stimulation) includes a range of treatments using electricity to reduce pain and inflammation, decrease muscle spasms, improve circulation, promote healing, strengthen muscles, and stimulate bone growth.
Electrical current passes through the joints and soft tissues (muscles, tendons, and ligaments) and in doing so, it decreases swelling and improves circulation by contracting and relaxing muscles. Decrease in swelling is very important and effective for pain control and limiting cell death. Reduction in swelling keeps as many cells alive as possible so that the healing process takes place swiftly and effectively.
Electrotherapy will also relax hypertonic and spasmodic muscles. This helps the healing process by allowing for more blood and lymphatic supply into the area. Decreasing muscle spasms decreases pain and allows for better mobility of the joint.
What to expect on your first visit
During your first visit you will be asked to complete some paperwork that provides basic information about yourself and your reason for contacting us. A consultation with the chiropractor will give you the chance to discuss your concerns and get to know one another. The chiropractor will complete a thorough health history and examination of your spine and nervous system. The doctor will check your posture, range of motion, reflexes, and perform other chiropractic, physical, and orthopedic tests. If it is determined that yours is not a chiropractic problem, the proper referral will be made. If the doctor feels that chiropractic will help your condition, a diagnosis will be rendered and a care plan of specific chiropractic adjustments will be recommended.
