Ice vs. Heat: What’s Better for Pain?
One of the most common questions patients ask is whether ice or heat is better for pain relief. The answer depends on the type of pain you’re experiencing.
When to Use Ice
Ice is best for acute injuries and inflammation, especially within the first 48–72 hours. Use ice for:
- Recent injuries
- Swelling or inflammation
- Migraine headaches
- Sprains or strains
Ice helps reduce swelling and numb pain. Treat for no longer than 20 minutes at a time
When to Use Heat
Heat works best for chronic pain and muscle stiffness. Use heat for:
- Tight or sore muscles
- Tension headaches
- Chronic back or neck pain
- Muscle tension
Heat increases blood flow and helps muscles relax. Treat for no longer than 20 minutes at a time.
Ice or Heat for Back and Neck Pain?
- New pain or injury → Ice
- Ongoing or chronic pain → Heat
If pain persists, ice and heat can help manage symptoms, but they don’t fix the underlying cause. At Infinity Chiropractic in Winnipeg, we can help identify and treat the source of your pain for long-term relief.
